Report an Absence

Students are expected to attend all assigned classes each day. It is important that you contact the office whenever your student will be absent from school.

Please remember, per District Policy (listed in the Student's Rights and Responsibilities Handbook under Section B), and also in Maywood's Student Handbook, parents have the responsibility to promptly notify the school within 48 hours when their student's absence or tardiness should be excused.

New Process for Reporting an Absence:

  • Login to ParentVUE  LOGIN TO PARENTVUE
  • Click the "Report Absence" button next to the name of your absent student
  • Fill in the fields with the date(s) of the absence and provide an explanation
  • Click to submit, automatically notifying the school of the absence

Learn more or view step-by-step images and instructions.  You can use this method to report an absence of up to 4 days.  An absence of 5 days or longer requires families to submit a Notice of Pre-Arranged Extended Absence Form.

ABSENCES

Every day of school is important, and we encourage regular attendance. On the other hand, children should not be sent to school if they show signs of illness. If a child becomes ill at school, a parent will be called to pick the child up in the health room. If your child has had a temperature, please wait until it is normal (98.6) for 24 hours before you send the child back to school.  All students well enough to come to school will be considered well enough to go outside for recess.

Please note:  For absences lasting 5 or more school days, please contact the office for assistance in submitting an Absence Request Form or download this fillable form, fill in the details, and email it to mhattendance@nsd.org.

TARDINESS

Students are considered tardy if they are not inside their classroom when the tardy bell rings at 9:05 am. Tardy students must check in at the office to receive an office pass before going to class. Please be conscientious about on-time arrival so that students hear opening announcements about the day’s events and begin their school day with the rest of the class.

  • Students whose tardiness is the result of illness, family emergency, car troubles, or health care appointments will be considered excused tardy. Abuses of these excuses may result in a call from the principal.
  • Tardiness as a result of sleeping in, late start, doing homework, or coming to school late regularly will be considered an unexcused tardy even with a signed parent/guardian note.
  • Excessive tardiness or absenteeism will be considered when reviewing whether a waiver will be granted to students who live outside the Maywood attendance area.
